I am Matthew Anthony Fox, the principal attorney at Fox Law, where I enjoy the privilege of practicing law in my home State of Florida and beautiful New Mexico. There is something about the mountains and desert of New Mexico that bring tranquility to me, and a stark contrast to the blue horizons and flat lands where I grew up.

I am a first-generation lawyer from Jacksonville’s Westside where I attended N.B. Forrest High School, Jacksonville Heights, and Oak Hill Elementary School. My father worked his way up from turning wrenches for Uncle Sam on Cecil Field to being the comptroller for NAS JAX Public Works Division. My mother taught kindergarten in Clay and Duval County public schools. Besides growing up on Jacksonville’s westside, I also spent some of my childhood living on the naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (GTMO or GITMO).

After high school, I went to the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering.  During my studies at the University of Florida, I worked as an environmental engineering student at Cargill Fertilizer in Riverview, Florida (on the Gulf of Mexico, just south of Tampa Bay). At Cargill, I was first exposed to the damage that manufacturing environments can have on its employees and surrounding communities. I had a Chevrolet S-10, black with gold pinstriping that had its paint tarnished and pitted within just months of parking in the companies’ uncovered parking lot (the reason: sulfuric acid being discharged with the high temperature gases from the smokestack a la acid rain) - my interest in pursuing a career in law was born.

My engineering degree provided me with the opportunity to relocate to New York City to work for the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a project manager on the remediation of toxic waste sites (also known as CERCLA or Superfund sites) and as a toxic tort analyst for American International Group (AIG) handling lead paint, asbestos, and mold injury claims.  In these pre-attorney roles, I learned about government regulatory agency operations and insurance claims handling operations, these career experiences furthered my interest in pursuing a career in law. While learning the ways of the regulators and insurance companies, I put myself through law school in the evenings at New York Law School with the assistance of a full merit scholarship. Along the way, my curiosity and interest in law started to focus on intellectual property and tort law, particularly, patent law, medical malpractice, and toxic torts.

As a law student, I gained a summer internship at Amster, Rothstein & Ebenstein LLP (ARE) in New York City to explore high-stakes intellectual property litigation and counseling. I looked for new attorney positions in medical malpractice and toxic torts, but they were impossible to come by at that time and I could not afford to hang a shingle in New York City. I spent eight years working with the partners at ARE on complex intellectual property litigation with principal focus on defending and litigating (suing) patents, trademarks, trade dress rights, and unfair competition for multinational corporations.  My experience with ARE led to seven years working as lead in-house business and patent attorney for multinational corporations, including Panasonic Corporation in Osaka, Japan; LSI Corporation in Allentown, Pennsylvania; and Wi-LAN Inc., in Ottawa, Canada. In these roles, I gained experience in negotiating settlements to intellectual property and commercial contract disputes involving hundreds of millions in damages, establishing strategies that leveraged intellectual property into eight-figure settlements, and advising the C-Suite on all aspects of intellectual property and commercial litigation and transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures, that generated nine-figures in annual revenue.

With just over a decade of training in complex litigation and commercial transactions and having litigator, boardroom, transactional, and international practice perspectives, I established Fox Law in 2016 to focus on what I went to law school in the first place - helping my fellow citizen with legal matters affecting our local community. Candidly, I had also grown tired of the monthly trips to Europe and Asia, and missing important events at home.

Currently, my law practice is focused on issues centered in medicine, science, and technology, with 100% of my effort helping the wrongfully hurt and wrongfully accused, and their families, obtain compensation or acquittals from careless and unjust actors. Unfortunately, no amount of compensation or clearing one’s good name in a courtroom can undo the permanent damage my clients and their families must endure on a daily basis from the careless and unjust. It is my hope that through jury trials, we can hold bad actors accountable so that the next time the careless and unjust go to act, they choose to act with the requisite care and diligence that is expected of us toward our fellow citizens, such that another person and family do not needlessly suffer from what was preventable had someone done their civic duty, done their job, or acted with care.

Besides being admitted to practice law in New Mexico and Florida, I am also admitted to practice law in Indiana, and New York, and I am registered to practice as a patent attorney before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
